While certainly not bringing anything new to the table, The New Mutants remains a pretty standard superhero outing. A mediocre plot with some great eerie atmosphere at least make it enjoyable enough for X-Men fans to watch as one final film in the now-dead Fox franchise.
Famed director Christopher Nolan’s most recent film is an enjoyable, if convoluted, outing. While Tenet will be remembered for its mind-blowing special effects and production design, its hurt by its unnecessarily confusing narrative, stagnant performances and soulless story.
Proving that his first outing was not a fluke, director John Krasinski stuns again in one of the best horror film sequels of all time. Building off the success of the 2018 film, A Quiet Place Part II is a masterpiece of horror sound and atmosphere with some excellent performances to back it up. While it comes just a tad short of the first film, it remains a worthwhile sequel that fans of the original cannot miss.
Promising Young Woman is an excellent directorial debut for Emerald Fennell with an outstanding lead performance, despite a final turn that works in terms of shock value, but severely derails the message of the film, almost the the point of cheapening everything that was so wonderful before it.
The highly anticipated sequel to the fantastic 2017 film Wonder Woman is a rather mixed bag, but it's filled with quite a few sweet treats if you let yourself overlook enough to enjoy it. Not without its many faults, particularly with its storytelling, the film still manages to entertain those fans of the Amazonian demigoddess.
Despite being an excellent source material, excellent special effects and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro as a co-producer, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark fails to capture the horror. Instead, it feels weighed down by weak performances, a lack of substance and retreaded horror storytelling that makes the film feel empty. In fact, these scary stories would have been best left in the dark.
All the Bright Places is a well-told young adult drama, albeit occasionally a bit of a melodramatic one, with great performances by its two leads and a beautiful somber story that will resonate and emotionally move all audiences.
For the better part of the 2000s, the Resident Evil film series dominated the zombie apocalypse and video game adaptation box office numbers. With six films under its belt, Resident Evil still reigns as the highest-grossing video game adaptation films of all time, despite none of the films being met with critical acclaim. Helmed primarily by Paul W. S. Anderson with his now-wife Milla Jovovich in the starring role of all six films, the series still found financial success primarily in overseas markets.
Disney’s latest attempt to adapt yet another beloved animated classic falls flat in almost every regard. With most of the fun and light-heartedness stripped away, there’s very little joy to be found in 2020’s live-action Mulan when compared to the predecessor, but some decent acting, directing and production design makes the film at least watchable.
When talking about teen dramas of the 1990s, Cruel Intentions can often be overlooked as one of the most influential and groundbreaking films of the genre.
